Luciano Pavarotti was born in Modena, Italy, in 1935. He first sang in the Modena chorus with his father, a fervent lover of opera. His operatic debut came in 1961, in the Reggio Emila opera house. The success he had here led to engagements throughout Italy and the world.His American debut came in 1965 in a Miami production of Lucia di Lammermoor.
It was not unitl February, 1972 that Pavarotti came to the Metropolitan Opera in La Fille de Regiment. The audience responded with a frienzed ovation and the tenor's reputation soared into new heights.
He has long been associated with Decca Records and include collection of arias and recital programs, live concerts, and anthologies of Neapolitan and other Italian songs.
He has made frequent television appearances in performance as well as in documentaries and on talk shows. His recent performance on PBS "The Three Tenors" has been a hit, and is used in the PBs fund raising shows.
He consistently draws record breaking audiences to sold out arena concerts. In June 1993, 500,000 fans gathered to enjoy his perfomance on the Great Lawn of New York's Central Park, while millions more watched around the world on TV.
Pavorotti is also dedicated to the development of the careers of young singers, and conducts master classes at conservatories around the world. Vocal students that he has mentored, have had sussessful carers on opera stages around the world.
His radiant personality , his zest for life, his golden voice, trancends he walls of opera houses to reach inside the human heart and mind.
